This document uses styles; in order to see everything correctly (especially the phoneme tables), please use Apple's SimpleText. You should have the Monaco, Geneva and InternationalPhonemic fonts installed on your computer.
The Phonemic Font Package (PFP) supersedes the InternationalPhonemic font release. The PFP consists of this font plus a variation of it with a different keyboard layout, PhonemicTwo.
The phonemic symbols are based on the principles issued by the International Phonetic Association (IPA) and correspond to those used by Daniel Jones and A.C. Gimson in their English Pronouncing Dictionary, 14th edition.
Anyone who uses the fonts for more than 14 days must register and pay the shareware fee of US$ 10 (Austria: ATS 100,-/UK: £7). Registered users will be informed of future releases which will include phonemic symbols for languages other than English. Site licences are available. Please refer to the chapter on Registration/Distribution below.

Since some people thought that International Phonemic 1.0.3 was actually newer than PFP 1.0.2, I corrected PFP's release number. The fonts themselves have not been changed, but there have been a few changes as far as PFP's registration and distribution policy is concerned.

Release 1.0 - September, 1994
Release 1.0 of the Phonemic Font Package (PFP) supersedes the International Phonemic shareware release. PFP consists of two phonemic symbol fonts, which use the same character set but have different keyboard layouts, International Phonemic (Release 1.0.3) and PhonemicTwo (Release 1.0).
The reason for this is simply compatibility. InternationalPhonemic used a key layout which I devised myself, whereas PhonemicTwo uses a layout that is also used by other phonemic symbol fonts, e.g. LPPhonetiqueIPA.
All registered users of InternationalPhonemic should have received PFP 1.0 by e-mail or snail mail. They may consider themselves registered users of PFP. If you happen to be the one user that I forgot, please accept my sincerest apologies and send me a note voa e-mail.

General Information
The Phonemic Font Package (PFP) has been eagerly awaited by students of English all the world over. Its two fonts provide all the standard phonemes of English as used by Daniel Jones and A.C. Gimson in Everyman's English Pronouncing Dictionary, 14th edition, plus some non-standard ones, and is thus an invaluable tool for anyone doing phonemic transcriptions on the Mac.
Future releases of PFP will include phonemic symbols for languages other than English. Registered users will be informed of all future releases and will receive the upgrade free of charge upon request. Information on updates is also available on my web page at <http://members.magnet.at/hprill/>.
The PFP fonts are distributed in PostScript Type 1 format. As such, they can be used on any PostScript printer (i.e., most LaserWriters), and, if you have Adobe TypeManager™ installed on your computer, on all QuickDraw printers (such as the StyleWriter, DeskWriter, LaserWriter LS & 300, etc.). If you own a QuickDraw printer but do not have Adobe TypeManager™, you get a TrueType version free of charge if you send me a 3.5" disk, a self-addressed disk mailer and two IPCs along with your registration fee. (See also the section on customizing your font suitcase below.)
Please be aware that release 2.0 or higher is available to registered users ONLY and is NOT to be distributed as shareware.
Installing your software
a) Easy installation (System 7.x)
Most users will want to install the fonts the easy way. To do so, first quit all open applications. Then locate your System Folder icon, but do not open it. Drag the "InternationalPhonemic" and "PhonemicTwo" suitcases and the "InterPho" and "PhoneTwo" PostScript files onto it. You will be asked if you want to store these items at special places in your system folder. Click OK. That's it.
b) Sort-of easy installation (System 6.x)
"Easy" installation (what I really mean in this context is configure-and-forget) under System 6.x is only possible via the Font/DA Mover. If you don't know how the Font/DA Mover works, check your Macintosh manual for a detailed description. Then open the Font/DA Mover, locate the "PFP System 6 Only" suitcase, select all the entries and copy them into the System file. Quit the Font/DA Mover and drag the "InterPho" and "PhoneTwo" files into your system folder.
c) Really easy installation (System 6.x)
I recommend that System 6 users use FontPorter, an INIT that comes with Adobe Type Manager™. With FontPorter installed, you do not need the Font/DA Mover; all you do is just drag the "PFP System 6 Only" suitcase and the PostScript files into the System Folder and restart. That's it.
d) Expert installation
Experienced users (and those who hate the Font/DA Mover) will want to install the font via Suitcase™. Experienced users (and people used to using Suitcase™) will not require me to tell them how to do this, because they're experienced (or at least used to using Suitcase™). Install the font, and have fun.
e) Removing the font
If you think the font is useless or if you don't want to pay your shareware fee after 14 days of using it, you'd better remove it.
• Under System 7.x, use the Finder's Find command to find "InternationalPhonemic" and "PhonemicTwo". Drag the found suitcase file into the trash. If they're not found, open the System suitcase; you'll find them there. Then use the Find command to find "InterPho" and "PhoneTwo". Drag them into the trash as well. Empty the trash.
• Under System 6.x, start the Font/DA Mover. Following the instructions in your manual, remove all "InternationalPhonemic" and "PhonemicTwo" entries. Open your System Folder, locate the "InterPho" and "PhoneTwo" files (and, if it is there, the "PFP System 6 Only" suitcase) and trash them.
Voilà. You have saved yourself from paying your shareware fee.
Customizing your font suitcase
This applies ONLY to users with QuickDraw printers, such as the ImageWriter, StyleWriter, DeskWriter, LaserWriter LS, LaserWriter Select 300 and others:
If you belong to the poor souls that are using System 6.0.1 or earlier: either get more recent system software and Adobe Type Manager™ — System 6.0.5 will do if you don't want to switch to System 7— or remove all point sizes except 36pt from the suitcase/system.
If you use System 6.0.2 to System 6.0.5 and don't have Adobe Type Manager™: get it, at all costs — or remove all point sizes except 36pt from the suitcase/system.
If you use System 6.0.6 or later and don't have Adobe Type Manager™: either get it or order the TrueType version of the font with your registration. Don't forget to state what version of the system software you are using. Until you get the TrueType font, remove all point sizes except 36pt from the suitcase/system.
How to get the phonemes - InternationalPhonemic
N.B.: These phonemes are displayed only if the InternationalPhonemic font has been installed on your computer and if you're using a text reader that can display styles, such as SimpleText. If the phonemes do not appear on your screen/printout, quit your program, install the font and open the documentation with SimpleText.
You may find other characters which are not on this list; do not use them! They are subject to change in future versions.

Troubleshooting
If a symbol has changed after you installed a new version...
• Do not use symbols which are present in the font but which are not listed in the phoneme list in this documentation. They are subject to change.
If the font does not print in high quality…
• Make sure that Adobe TypeManager™ is installed on your computer. If ATM™ appears to be installed, refer to the ATM™ manual for possible solutions to the problem.
• If you do not own Adobe TypeManager™, send for the TrueType version of the font along with your registration fee (you need System 6.0.6 or higher to run TrueType fonts).
• Refer to the section on "Customizing the font suitcase" for other possible solutions.
If the computer crashes after you installed the font or whenever you want to assign the font to text…
• Re-install both Adobe TypeManager™ and both PFP fonts font from clean master disks. Refer to the ATM™ manual for possible solutions. Try to get an update of ATM™. At the time of this writing, the most recent version seems to be 3.9.
• Make sure all other software concerned with font management is okay. Make sure you are using a good and up-to-date copy of Suitcase™ (or whatever you are using), and that it doesn't conflict with other software. Consult the respective manuals.
• If the problem persists, there could be a font ID conflict, although this is most improbable. Suitcase™ checks for font ID conflicts. Try to install the font with Suitcase™.
• If the problem persists, send me an e-mail message (h.prill@magnet.at), and we'll see what we can do about it.
Registration/Distribution
Sorry for getting onto your nerves, but once again I have to remind you that this software is not free. Commercial fonts usually cost lots of money, especially specialist ones like the PFP fonts. Fortunately, PFP is not expensive at all.
You may use the PFP fonts free of charge for a trial period of 14 days. If you want to continue using one of the fonts (or both of them) after this period, you have to register and pay your shareware fee.
The fee is US$ 10 (Austria: ATS 100,-). This entitles you to use one copy of each font on one computer at one time (you are free to move the font from one computer to another, but you are not allowed to use two copies simultaneously). For each additional computer that you want to install this software on, add US$ 5 (ATS 50,-), up to a maximum fee of US$ 50 (ATS 500,-).
From outside Europe it's cash only, and only US$, please. From inside Europe you can send cash (US$ or ATS), Eurocheques or UK cheques. But please notice that Eurocheques are ONLY accepted if the amount is entered in Austrian Schillings (ATS) and and your card number is entered at the back; UK cheques must be drawn on UK banks (£7 for the first computer, £3 for every additional licence, maximum fee £30) - see the registration form for details.

Distributing the Phonemic Font Package
You may copy and hand on the PhonemicFontPackage.sit-File, but not the single files. This is to ensure that only complete and undamaged packages of the software are being distributed. Under no circumstances are users allowed to hand on versions 2.0 or later of the font. These are available to registered users ONLY.
You are not allowed to charge money for the distribution of the font (downloading fees from BBSs excepted). Commercial distribution and bundling with other software is permitted only with written consent from the author. If you wish to include it on a CD-ROM you are allowed to do so without asking permission if you send me a complimentary copy of it or pay a full site licence (US$ 50/ATS 500,-/£30).
